Cycling until the doctor comes

Uwe Richter was born in Suhl (Thuringia) in 1956. He started riding a racing bike when he was twelve years old. He was so talented that three years later he was delegated to the "Werner Seelenbinder" children's and youth sports school in East Berlin. Richter tells of everyday life at the state boarding school and why he gave up his career as an athlete at the age of 17 and fell out with his father.

Boycott action in chess

The German chess grandmaster Wolfgang Uhlmann was invited to the zone tournament in Spain together with the GDR team. Like all other Warsaw Pact countries, the GDR boycotted its participation because of the Franco regime. Without further ado, the tournament was moved to Yugoslavia, which, however, provoked the displeasure of the SED leadership.
