Suitcase bomb

Dummy; loaned by Dr. Heinrich Peyers

The HVA used this dummy to train its agents in the use of suitcase bombs. They practiced both the construction of such an explosive device and its defusing.

In the 1980s, the Stasi and the HVA were demonstrably involved in several bomb attacks in West Berlin. In both the attack on the French cultural center Maison de France on Kurfürstendamm on August 25, 1983, and on the discotheque La Belle in Berlin Schöneberg on the night of April 4-5, 1986, which was also visited by U.S. soldiers, HVA agents helped the terrorists build the bombs.

Four people were killed and numerous injured in these attacks.

Case with hidden machine gun

HVA agent case

Hidden in this case was a Scorpion submachine gun, which could be fired by a lever on the top of the case.

The Stasi and the HVA also trained their agents for assassinations abroad. The main targets were escape helpers in West Germany, defectors, opposition members, but also German citizens who were active against the GDR regime.
